It delivers exactly what it promises。 Great illustrations, solid science, and it's hilarious。 I plan on letting my kids read it and show them how well science can answer useless questions。 It delivers exactly what it promises。 Great illustrations, solid science, and it's hilarious。 I plan on letting my kids read it and show them how well science can answer useless questions。 。。。more

A science book with preposterous ( but scientifically correct) questions and answers。 Alot of fun!

We really enjoyed this, as we have all his other books。 The topics seem silly, but always manage to teach you something useful。 My favorites in this book were the fireman’s pole to the moon, the walk back in time, and the risk of raining candy from the sky。 XKCD will always be one of my favorite comics and the books are just as good。

People ask really weird questions, especially about the sun。

If you read this before bed, here are some of the really messed up dreams you can have:*licking the sun*your proximity to a spider at any given time*a black hole made of soup*burning blocks of iron*swimming in a pool full of spit。。。。。。。。。。。 *makes face*Seriously, all hilarity aside, this is a very good book, full of very good science and lots of thought provoking questions which will lead you to a lot of good conversations with your family and possibly hours of googling fun。 Just don't read it b If you read this before bed, here are some of the really messed up dreams you can have:*licking the sun*your proximity to a spider at any given time*a black hole made of soup*burning blocks of iron*swimming in a pool full of spit。。。。。。。。。。。 *makes face*Seriously, all hilarity aside, this is a very good book, full of very good science and lots of thought provoking questions which will lead you to a lot of good conversations with your family and possibly hours of googling fun。 Just don't read it before bed。 。。。more

As inspirational as the first What If?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this novel。 I am rating this book based the stars due to lack of time to leave a full review。

A new batch of absurd hypothetical questions that I've asked! I loved this book and now I know why we can't use catapults to launch airplanes (something I've actually wondered)。 A new batch of absurd hypothetical questions that I've asked! Lots of interesting and out-of-this-world questions with answers rooted in science。 There are a lot of questions! Some are more interesting than others, but that could also be relative。 Fans of science and those who pursue wacky scenarios will of course love this book (complete with stick figure illustrations)。 Review copy provided by the author。

Thanks to NetGalley for this review copy!Well, Randall Munroe is already my favorite webcomic artist, and I loved the first What If? so it is no surprise that I loved this one, too。 I really liked the shorter sections as well as the long explanations, laughed out loud so many times, and found myself reading many to my family as I went。 Another great effort。 If you like science topics done in a fun way, or you are an xkcd fan, you are sure to like this。

*** Goodreads Giveaway ***I received this book for a GoodReads giveaway。 This book was very interesting and fun to read。 I really enjoyed the drawings and the fun tone of the answers to the questions。 I will have to say, a lot of the information was a little "over my head", but it was still fun to read, and I learned a lot! :) *** Goodreads Giveaway ***I received this book for a GoodReads giveaway。 This book was very interesting and fun to read。 I really enjoyed the drawings and the fun tone of the answers to the questions。 I will have to say, a lot of the information was a little "over my head", but it was still fun to read, and I learned a lot! :) 。。。more

Randall Monroe is the author of the webcomic xkcd。 In this book he takes ridiculous, extreme questions (like "What if Japan suddenly left the Earth?") and reasons about the results using (primarily order-of-magnitude) scientific estimates。 If this sounds familiar, that's because the book is just like What If #1, except with different questions。 I enjoyed it more, though, because I read many of the questions in the previous book online as they came out, and this book was all new to me。The book is Randall Monroe is the author of the webcomic xkcd。 In this book he takes ridiculous, extreme questions (like "What if Japan suddenly left the Earth?") and reasons about the results using (primarily order-of-magnitude) scientific estimates。 If this sounds familiar, that's because the book is just like What If #1, except with different questions。 I enjoyed it more, though, because I read many of the questions in the previous book online as they came out, and this book was all new to me。The book is easy to understand and studded with comics, which keeps things light, even though the subject matter frequently leads to the Earth being rapidly destroyed, most impressively in "what if the Earth was made completely of protons and the Moon was made completely of electrons?" but also in "what if Niagara Falls were sent through a straw?" and several others。A few facts I found interesting:1。 I experience two more seconds of daylight a day than most people, because I am 6'5。2。 I am descended from about 10% of all the people who have ever lived。3。 Vladivostok has a beach covered in weathered, colored glass。4。 You can't use any optical system to make a spot hotter than the surface of the light source。I was lucky to receive an advanced reader copy。 The book will be published in September。 But if you come to my house you can read it。 。。。more

I love this book。 I really loved the first one in this series, and so was very excited to read the second one as well! I am very glad I did, I think it was great and well written collection of ideas, and I like the intellectual approach to so many silly questions。 Its not exactly a golden line, however my favorite from this book might be the story about what would happen if you built a billion story skyscraper。 I think this is a thought everyone has had as kids, what if we made a taller, and tal I love this book。 I really loved the first one in this series, and so was very excited to read the second one as well! ***Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***What If? 2 gives us exactly what we wanted: ridiculous questions answered (somewhat) seriously。 Hilarious and baffling!

I have purchased every Randall Munroe book available for my husband, yet never read one myself until now。 I’m so sad over the joy I’ve unknowingly deprived myself! This is a book of answered questions; The kind of questions which can only be asked by the mind of a child- before we age and begin calling that kind of magical thinking “ridiculous。” Munroe answers each one using logic, math, science, and tons of research in a manner that is engaging and fun。 The diagrams are charming and hilarious。 I have purchased every Randall Munroe book available for my husband, yet never read one myself until now。 I’m so sad over the joy I’ve unknowingly deprived myself! ALL RIGHT, RANDALL。 There better be a hypothetical answer in here about a t-rex on top of a plane because I'm still burned from there being NO SARLACC in the first book, despite the promise on the cover of the book。 That is all。 ALL RIGHT, RANDALL。 There better be a hypothetical answer in here about a t-rex on top of a plane because I'm still burned from there being NO SARLACC in the first book, despite the promise on the cover of the book。 That is all。 。。。more
